Why Don't I Feel Guilty of my Sin?

Why Don’t I Feel Guilty of my Sin?

I don’t feel convicted of my sin. Why don’t I feel bad like I am supposed to?

I felt this sentiment about my sin constantly before I was saved and when I first started hearing about Christianity. One of the core doctrines of Christianity was to repent of your sin. And repentance means to have remorse or to feel guilty over your transgressions.

Repenting is defined as “to feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one’s wrongdoing or sin”.

But why didn’t I feel bad about the sins I had committed? When I looked back on my sins I thought to myself, “Well I never hurt anyone so what’s the big deal?” I mean, it’s not like I murdered anyone right? I genuinely felt as though I was a good person and I believed I was “doing good” in God’s eyes.

I think we truly feel like we are good people and that we are living good lives. We go to work everyday, we pay our taxes, we love our family, etc. It is unfathomable to think that we aren’t good people. I believe that part of the problem is we live in a self-righteous society. You work everyday and are a contributing member of society. You don’t hurt others and mainly keep to yourself. But what if we have lost touch with what sin is and what it really means? Maybe the things that are considered morally acceptable in our society are actually not in God’s eyes.

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality” – 1 Corinthians 6:9

What a reality check! How much of that verse is viewed as acceptable in Western culture! Sexual immorality, adultery, and homosexuality are practically staples of our culture! Maybe we aren’t really understanding God’s perspective?

The reason I didn’t feel guilty of my sin was because I didn’t know God. When I started to read the Bible, I began to understand how high his standard truly is thus how far I fell short.

It wasn’t until I really started reading the Bible that I began feeling conviction. I started to realize how truly righteous and holy God is, and what he expects of us. When I read some of the radical things Jesus said, I was blown away:

“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” – Matthew 5:28 KJV

“Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” – 1 John 3:15

I couldn’t believe what I was reading. If I even look at a women with lust I have committed adultery? I must have committed adultery five times just this morning by this standard! I was finally starting to realize how truly wretched I was in God’s sight.

In order to truly feel guilty of our sins, we first have to understand what sin really is. We need to gauge our righteousness not by what society tells us is ok, but rather the Bible. Societies change but God’s word is eternal. If you are having trouble feeling convicted of your sins, you need to get into the Word daily to see your life from God’s perspective, not man’s.
